CB&Q Class LO-2C 87570
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-2C 87570
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-2C 87570 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in December 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's publication, Burlington Bulletin 20 COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: Quite pleased with the performance of the Airslide cars, the Burlington continued to place regular orders for lots of 50 or 60 more of the 2,600 cubic foot cars through the early 1960's. Following to 60 Class LO-2B car of 1960 ( road #'s CB&Q 87500 - 87549 and C&S 800 - 809 ) came 50 LO-2C's in 1961 ( Q 87550 - 87599 ) and 50 LO-2D's in 1962 ( Q 87600 - 87639 and C&S 810 - 819 ). A couple of tiny spotting features differentiate these cars. First, the vibrator brackets of the 1961 cars and all subsequent Airslides are mounted on oval pads somewhat larger than the rectangular pads used on all previous production. Then, on the 1962 cars, the number of rivets employed on the vertical channel braces at the ends of each car side is reduced considerably from previous standard practice; where earlier cars have 26 rivets per channel brace, the 1962 LO-2D's have but 12, and the bottom connection to the side is welded rather than riveted.

CB&Q Class LO-4 85520
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-4 85520
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-4 85520 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: In the early 1960's, Pullman-Standard developed the PS-2CD design, which eliminated the split discharge gates by running the center sill through the inside of the hoppers, thus allowing a single, center-discharge outlet for each hopper, for a total of three outlets per car instead of the previously standard six. Cubic capacity was increased to 4,000 cubic feet by raising the sides another 18 inches and extending the slope sheets all the way to the end of the car frame. Roller bearing trucks of 100-ton capacity were also employed. The Q bought 190 PS-2CD's in 1963, numbering them 85500 - 85689. The first 140 were class LO-4 ( the HC class designation having been abandoned after 1961 ) and featured the traditional 10 circular loading hatches. The last 50 cars were the first Burlington covered hoppers with trough loading hatches and thus were classed LO-4A. All 190 cars still employed the 4/3/4 outside post pattern and had Enterprise gravity outlets.

These big 4,740 cubic-foot capacity grain cars were of a new design featuring "high" sides ( actually shallow sides with a deep bottom edge higher than normal ), very deep hoppers with the center sill passing through them, and center discharge outlets. Trough hatches had quickly become standard on grain cars, and these Class LO-10 and LO-10A cars featured lightweight four-section fiberglass loading hatches. Built after the 1967 AAR rule changes regarding non-essential rooftop running boards and the consequent positioning of hand brake wheels, these cars had low-mounted brake wheels.

CB&Q Class LO-3 85401
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-3 85401
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-3 85401 at Cicero, Illinois on October 17, 1982, Kodachrome by Gib Allbach, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner; The Burlington was one of the first roads to purchase examples of AC&F's revolutionary Center Flow cars, acquiring 10 of the 3.500 cubic foot versions in May 1963. Built at AC&F's Huntington, West Virginia shops, the LO-3 class had one compartment, six loading hatches, and three Enterprise gravity outlets. The car's clean lines result from the tubular design, which allowed elimination of outside posts commonly used for structural bracing in traditional designs. Not truly cylindrical, the design actually featured an oval or "inverted teardrop" cross section. Predating the era of trough loading hatches (featured on future orders of the same design ), the 10 LO-3's each had six circular centerline hatches for filling the car's single compartment. The CB&Q LO-3 class was renumbered into the BN 441000 - 441009 series.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-10 184740 at Eola, Illinois on June 21, 1983, Kodachrome Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 350 Class LO-10 cars built by Pullman-Standard in 1967 ( at the P-S Butler, PA plant ), numbered 184600 - 184949 ( later, BN 457000 - 457349 ). The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: During 1967 and 1968, the largest group of Pullman-Standard covered hoppers joined the Q roster in three separate orders totaling 575 cars. All but 50 of the 575 LO-10's had straight gravity discharge outlets of either the Enterprise or Fabko variety; cars 184925 - 184949 featured Enterprise Gravac vacuum-assisted gravity outlets.

Inside, the first 50 cars had Evans two piece load dividers and 2-D side fillers."
